Jacqueline Cochran (1906-1980) became the first female to break the sound barrier on May 18, 1953. Cochran didn't just break the barrier of sound, but she broke the barrier of discrimination against women. She proved that they are strong enough to withstand G-force, the most challenging part of flight. She cleared the way for women to fast-speed aviation and space.

"Jackie Cochran performed an amazing feat breaking the sound barrier in 1953. But even more important, she was breaking down the barriers for women to pursue their dreams in aviation. Her role was certainly crucial."
